Buying a receiver

Not decided on Sky or non-Sky yet? Check out our Which system? page.

Choosing a Non-Sky receiver

We can't advise on choosing a receiver, so here we direct you to the websites that can.
Free-to-Air receivers cost from £60, with plenty to choose from at the £100 mark. Some include a hard drive to record many hours of TV, and are called 'Personal Video Recorders' - PVR's. A number of PVR's are compared at Radio and Telly's website.
There is even a combined receiver for both Freeview and Satellite reception.

Take a quick look at some of the following websites for more info.

Buying a receiver (Sky or Non-Sky)

A New receiver is easy to obtain online. A sky box can be brought for around £100. Check out the list of suppliers below before ordering.
If you prefer buying from a local satellite supplier, try the Yellow Pages ‘Satellite TV’ section.

A Used Sky box sells for around £30 on ebay. Search ebay for 'Sky box' to see what's available. For a non-sky box, search using the makers name or you'll get virtually all sky boxes in the results. e.g. Search for 'Technomate receiver' or 'Topfield receiver'.
You could ask a local Satellite Installer if they have a second-hand box they wish to sell.
Lastly, look in the local classified adverts.

Check out Tips on using a Second-hand Sky box on our DIY page.

Thanks, Steve Lee.

Note: Although there are different makes of Sky digiboxes they all work in the same way.

Here is a selection of mail order satellite TV suppliers you could try.
I have no connection with any of the suppliers shown here. I list them to save you the trouble of looking for details yourself. If you have a good or bad experience with any supplier (including any not listed here), please tell me, and I'll update the comments on this page.
